The Madison Twp. community is remembering the life of 11-year-old Jaxsen Elkins who was killed last week in an accident at his home.

Members of the community are wearing red, tying red ribbons to poles and houses and marking a fence on Ohio 122 with the boy’s name.

The fifth-grade student, who loved to play baseball, was struck by an SUV around 7 p.m. in a driveway in the 6800 block of Cloister Cliffs Drive, near Brown’s Run golf course. The SUV was backing up and Elkins was walking behind it when the accident happened, according to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office report. Elkins was taken by a medical helicopter to a Dayton hospital and died of the injuries.

Madison Schools were closed Friday and there was a prayer gathering that evening in the elementary gym. A memorial was set up near the flagpole at the school.

On Sunday, community members spent several hours hanging ribbons on Ohio 122, West Alexandra and Elk Creek roads “in memory of Jaxsen and in support of the family,” the Madison Twp. Fire Department posted, urging drivers to be cautious.

The Madison Local School District asked all students on the campus to wear Elkins’ favor color, red, on Monday.

The district said it has counselors available at the elementary school “for anyone needing support with this tragedy.”

The accident remains under investigation by the Butler County Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team. The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office does not issue preliminary autopsy reports, and full reports can take up to eight weeks.
